Module Overview: Part 1
In this 30-credit module you are presented with the opportunity to make a 12 second title sequence or ‘sting’ with sound to introduce the Portobello film festival in 2011. The brief is almost completely free but the sting must end on the festival logo and the piece should reflect the spirit of the festival itself. You must work in groups of 2 or 3 but the sting can be executed in any medium (2d, 3d, CGI or lens based etc.) The ‘sting’ must be of broadcast quality and to a professional standard and by January 2011 one will be selected by the festival organisers to be screened during the festival in September 2011. The majority of the time allocated to this module is intended for self-directed study, supported by regular tutorials for technical, aesthetic and conceptual guidance.
Work to be assessed
Week 4:
You must present a completed animatic or a full-length video sketch with a rough sound track, which will effectively communicate your concept, and how you intend to translate that idea into film language. You will be assessed on how well you have engaged with the process of developing your idea from (at least) 2 video sketches in week 1 to one strong idea which as been worked and reworked. You must provide visual material to support this. The animatic must also include a short clip of ‘finished’ test animation, which demonstrates how you intend to execute your final film and is to a professional standard.
Week 10:
You must present your finished 12-second ‘sting’ with sound for a public presentation.
Assessment Guidance
A general guide to the process and criteria for assessment is given in your course handbook, but in particular, the assessment panel will be looking for evidence of the following:
PART 1
· A unique and innovative idea that reflects the spirit of the festival including examples of previous ideas and other supporting work, which provides proof of research and development.
· An animatic or a rough cut of your ‘sting’, which displays your skills as a communicator, using imaginative and interesting visual means.
· We will be looking for evidence of editing (pace and rhythm), shot composition, sound design, use of a design ethos, control of meaning, and an understanding of the client and the spirit of the festival.
· A level of self-motivation, engagement and autonomy as befits work at level 6 of degree study.
· The animation must be to a professional standard.
NB It is important to remember, you will be assessed at week 4 and at week 12
Failure to meet these 2 deadlines will mean that you may fail the module.
